I have a new completely open wrought iron staircase (my old one was very tight circular to accommodate my dad's wheel chair) and want wood steps. It has been suggested to me to
this house. Even if you did a 'switch-back' design It would not be practical since it would eat up too much floor space. Also, the max allowable opening between treads is 4" and on this stair it's actually under that so along with the handrail, i would consider this particular design safe. :: thirdstone
