I have been in basements with white painted structure and black and have found that the black actually gives the perception of added height because it recedes and creates more depth above. A white painted ceiling tends to pull
recede like the black paint. It also seems to look dirty. The walls were intentionally bright white to counteract the dark ceiling and lack of natural light. The floor throughout was painted grey. Lighting is always critical in basements especially this one.

Lights are standard cans with black trim ring mounted to plywood plate. I don't have spec on specific black paint color.
