I like my privacy, we here in south Florida planted clusias for our hedge (I believe the proper name is "ficus lyrata) very slow growing but should look good another 2 years from now!!!

They look like one of my favorite perennials - Deutzia Gracilis Nikko. They are quite easy to grow and very easy to propagate. They're not invasive, but it you allow a stem to touch the soil and eventually root itself it can be easily potted up. Keeps a nice mounded shape.
