What hangers work best for heavy coats, dresses and suits?

If you're looking for something that's durable and able to withstand more weight, wood or thick plastic hangers are your best option. The wider the better in this instance, since thinner plastic hangers can often bend and break under pressure. If you have formal dresses or suits that snag easily, try padded satin hangers; they are thick enough to withstand weight, but are also soft and cushy, which ensures that clothing doesn't dimple, wrinkle, stretch or snag.

What hangers work well with everyday clothing and accessories?

It might be tempting to just go with those free wire hangers, but resist the urge: These inexpensive pieces will tear, stretch and destroy your nice clothing. Rounded plastic hangers are the most cost-efficient option; the round edges hold onto the fabric and prevent any damage. For tank tops and wide-neck shirts, try textured, non-slip hangers, while tiered pant hangers work great for jeans and more casual pants. Finally, clipped hangers help keep shorts and skirts in check.

How can I use hooks in my home?

While hangers are primarily meant for clothes and closet organization, hooks are a sort of jack of all trades. Clothes, hats, purses, keys, belts and towels are easy to organize with wall hooks; in general, over-the-door hooks, coat racks and single hooks are great in a bathroom, entryway, garage, closet or bedroom.

Hooks come in a wide variety of modern styles and durability levels. If you're using it to hang up heavy purses, thick coats and towels, be sure to use a hook that is nailed or drilled into the wall — not one that is attached to the wall by some sort of an adhesive. You should think about the overall aesthetic too; after all, sometimes the hook will not be used, and therefore should look nice on your wall. They come in bright colors and interesting shapes, including animal patterns and anchors, so think about what works in your overall design scheme.
