What should I look for when buying outdoor accessories?

Before buying outdoor linens and accessories, like rugs, cushions and pillows, make sure they are weather and water resistant. If they are not meant for outdoor use, don’t use them; wind, water and cold or warm temperatures can quickly ruin even the most durable materials, so pieces need to be made to withstand the abuse. Since there are so many options to choose from now, this shouldn’t hinder you from finding a funky or trendy design.

How many outdoor throw pillows should I buy?

Although decorative accessories are a great way to add color and personality to a space, make sure you don’t overdo it. Just like with a traditional living space, putting too many pillows on outdoor chairs and sofas can quickly clutter a space and make sitting down an inconvenience. Instead, opt for one or two pillows per seat or couch, one umbrella per seating area and one large area mat plus a doormat on a patio or porch. To avoid any clashing, be sure all the patterns and colors are similar or complementary.

What style of outdoor rugs and cushions works for my space?

Don’t be afraid to go bold! Outdoor furniture is often neutral and bland in color, but adding bright cushions, pillows and rugs can bring in some much-needed color. But remember, if fabrics are exposed to the sun on a regular basis, they are likely to lose some of their colorful luster over time.
