I do often use edging. It depends on how clean a look is desired. Once plants grow over the edges, particularly tight growing ground covers like thyme
there - those are Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' or commonly called black mondo grass.
Example of rocks and grass with low lying plants that I don't like. Too intentional looking.
