Harmony Hill roof deck
Do these planter boxes drain directly onto the wood decking, or is the water somehow directed to flow between the boards? Just wondering if deck rotting is a concern. Thanks!

JD Garden, Hillsborough
The garden 3 weeks after planting, on a foggy day. Photo by Steve Masley
Of course I'm concerned about ecology, I've been an organic gardener for 30 years. And as I said, I rely on client's contractors to build the beds and make them structurally sound. In my years in the business, I've learned which designs are problematic, and which designs are more durable, and I incorporate
they'll last at least another 5 years. Trellises don't stay in the same place year after year, because you have to rotate crop families even in small gardens. So having a trellis bolted to the same place in a bed limits rotation and isn't ecologically sound. Sometimes, you don't want a trellis in the back
emphasizing anyone build trellis for $400 to $500. Instead we state that one puts a bit extra time in the design, and hardware. Why should one pay the gardener for something that last a few weeks or months. Yes, our boxes are durable, we don't build them like Chevy Novas but rather like Toyota pickup trucks

How is the structure under the deck made up to allow water to escape and not drain into the living space below
roof is sloped to scuppers on the edge of the parapets and drains to downspouts. The liveroof system sits on top of this and freely drains. The decking is built on tapered PT sleepers that are cut to fit the slope of the roof below.
Deck. We don't really want to lose a bunch of flowers where the deck is going.

Like how this incorporates decking and green space.

Give a roof new purpose.Part deck, part planted roof. this kind of design helps lessen the amount of rainwater runoff.

Two flats in Presidio Heights
to know the name of the deck contractor, in SF?
I have a house in Golden Gate Heights in SF, and am interested in building a floating deck over my downstairs living room. Any suggestions or sources? Thank you.
We are building a floating deck that is about 16x25 ft
Do tiled decks like this feel as solid as standard decks?
wondering if we could pull off this square pattern design using a mix of repurposed and new wood? If so, how would we accomplish the design/building of this deck? Any and all advice is much appreciated.

The easiest way to keep some color in the winter garden is by incorporating plenty of evergreens into the landscape. Even a rooftop garden with a mix of evergreens will feel inviting on a winter day.
