I hope you'll all forgive a small, uninvited tip: native soil is great IF its great. Horse manure can be full of weed seeds and very "hot" (look it up). Some places don't freeze hard enough to heave the ground (obviously not an issue in Chi-town). Homemade compost is often full of seeds, too. I wouldn't

We constructed the base of the garden out of 21A gravel and put the decorative gravel on top. There is probably 6-8" of base before it gets to the soil
This garden is unbelievably gorgeous. I see it is in a wooded environment. Curious if the fence helps to deter the critters! Would love to adapt this to my new home. What do they say about flattery?

perhaps more than you might imagine. Tip: Pick big bouquets for displaying and smaller bouquets just for cooking. Keep in mind that dried herbs tend to be about three to four times stronger than fresh, so a little bouquet will go a long way in cooking.
