Use of stone is interesting, don't like particular stone but finish looks nice.
I think a simple architectural stone surround like this (minus the key on the top center) would be the best option for trim

The flagstone is Pennsylvania Field stone and the gravel is 3/8s inch native washed gravel. No need for sand the fieldstone is set in the gravel. Good luck with your project. Robert
