We install 48" footings under all of pergolas. In the case where a pergola footing is installed in a raised bed or planter the 48" is installed at ground level plus the depth of the bed. In the image above the raised planter is about 20" making the total footing in the planter about 70" deep...

Beautiful project. Can you share what kind of stone you used in the fireplace and retaining walls? Was the fireplace custom? Very beautifully done.
The stone used was Carter Rock, quarried locally, and the fireplace is custom - built by Chris's crew from Botanical Decorators. CM
I like the tiered wall that frames the fireplace plus I like the built in flower beds.

A stone fireplace is built into a hill. We are certain that the hill helps to hold the heat. This is a great idea for those cold Minnesota nights.
