We used 1x2 cedar on the slats. This was a good option for this particular customer since they really keep up on the painting and maintenance. If I were building this today I would consider using 1x2 Miratec Composite with the added support of a small cable with a turnbuckle to prevent any sagging

It doesn't look like they have a vent hood, I will assume its because there is only the 1 short wall and the rest is open. Vent-a-Hood makes a grill vent hood for grills. Their ventilation is slightly different than regular vent hoods, lots

There is a minimal slope (1/2" = 1'). Its not quite enough. In subsequent projects we have tried to get more slope on features like these.
