with the idea, she whipped up some plans right away. "By the end of that weekend, I had drafted the plans and ordered the hardware to assemble the raised beds," she says. "I was out there in my wellies on Monday morning beginning the process of removing all that ghastly gravel."

A low wall and ipe deck define the space under this Eichler's wide roof overhang. Horsetail growing in planters from Restoration Hardware and the low wall mitigate the dominance of the swimming pool. Photo by Lisa Parramore.
Equisetum hyemale or horsetail are early to grow in containers but they need regular to ample water and do best in full sun. The plant will fill the entire container within 1-2years.

Grow your own herb gardenMake your planters work for you and grow a selection of fragrant herbs, such as mint, thyme and basil, outside your kitchen. Not only are herbs low maintenance and easy to grow, they look good, too. Keep a few freshly picked sprigs
variations on herbs and ideal for easy harvesting. Mix flowers in with the herbs to add color and interest, as was done here.Tip: Containers are best for growing mint. Plant it in your garden, and it will soon take over.
