I also live in the Catskills, and understand the desire for supplemental heat. I love the geometry of this wood burning stove, and was wondering who makes it and where it can be purchased. thanks in advance. Robbin
What a great fireplace/wood stove. I love it; fantastic design to utilize the space for the greatest comfort of heat in a cold climate in winter.

It is a Heat 'n Glo gas fireplace.
They are Heat 'N Glo brand and were purchased at Glowing Hearth & Home in Jordan, MN. Thanks, and good luck!
This looks like the Heat & Glo QVI which is now discontinued. They have some other great big fireplaces though.

I love the countertop. Can you tell me the n type of granite it is? Also, is there a wall under the eating counter or are the supports nailed right into the cabinet back? Thanks!
why did you choose the drop down on the bar area and not just keep it all bar height?
It's a gas fireplace and the manufacturer is Heat 'N Glo.
I am curious to why many fireplaces (like this one) don't have the back wall of the firebox sloping forward?
That's why the opening is wide, and the back of the fireplace has angled sides to reflect the radiant heat out. If you've eve been by a campfire, or sat in the sun, you know what radiant heat is. It's different from heating the air, which heats your skin. That's called convective heat. Radiant heat comes

When the Rumsford fireplace was invented, wood was the only source of heat, so extracting every bit of radiant heat they could
View of the island end, and, of the Island off the coast. Metal dual pane windows and doors insulate against the heat and cold and the constant sound of the Pacific. If you look closely, a plank on the end of the island shows a cattle brand that we found on one of the boards used. We can only guess that it might have been a test brand to see how hot the iron was. The amazing coincidence (maybe) was the letter of the brand was the initials of the owner/chefs first name.

It's just a couple and their eating habits are simple, natural foods, minimum frying etc... In our area a hood is not required by law. It's mostly for heat and smells. If you have good ventilation you can consider not having one.
fabricated here in Santa Barbara. Put into a container and shipped to you. It's not uncommon for kitchen cabinets to be sent from Europe to the US. Why not the US to South Africa if you have the budget I'd be happy to figure it out. Let me know.

A smaller version would be a place for a sweaty gardener to rinse head and neck with cold water. Sounds like a luxury, but in our local heat, sunstroke kills, and that cold water feels so good! If you use a farm hydrant you don't have to winterize it, and you can put it away from the house
Project: Add an outdoor shower. Why: An outdoor shower makes a mundane ritual much more appealing, allowing you to savor fresh air, sky, birdsong and possibly even a view while you bathe. It’s especially handy for rinsing off before or after a dip in the pool, a trip to the beach or a grubby day of gardening
