simple timber mantel. I'd advise starting with your local lumber yard, I would think they would be able to order one sized appropriately for your fireplace. I think this one was about 6" tall and about 12" deep. Best of luck!!

Not really. Fireplaces generally are an energy waster. Unless you get a sealed unit, they pull your heated air and send it up the chimney.
