I sense a pattern: more books and a sloping roof. Hallways are good places for books, because they don't take up space in other rooms and the mental noise they create (look how many of those books I haven't read yet!) is tucked out of the way, yet they are still easily accessible
Hallways can also be mezzanines, so the books then become a part of the larger house, not tucked away from other rooms.

removed! It is awesome for entertaining - keeps everyone feeling together! Btw, the renovators (2 owners before us) also removed the same wall on the other side of the stairs, so it's very open floor plan. I enjoy it, who cares if it's true to the period? Times change!
This black railing seems to work, even though no other wood is black (except maybe some accents on the furniture).
