A local metal worker did the posts and rail. Cable is by Feeney.
custom made stainless steel pipe with cable. The pipe connection is concealed by the tread to give it a clean look. On the side wall, the sheetrock goes right to the edge of the slightly overhanging treads.

check with your local building department to get the specifics for your area. In general cables should be spaced no more than 3" apart and an intermediate support every 42" between structural posts to prevent the cable from spreading and allowing a 4" sphere to pass through. Cable wiring was used on the staircase to continue an open feel on all three floors.

Here is another stair with cables in tension between steel supports. The design of this stair is simple, consisting of two materials: wood for the treads and handrails; steel for the stringers and guardrail/handrail supports. Note the attachment of the paired vertical supports to the face of the stringers
