protect the wood. Minwax fast dry polyurethane is a great product. It will go on clear, may change the color slightly, very slightly. Different finishes are available also. I used this on a red oak staircase and turned out great!

We have ours in some shelving. There is a lot going on in the shelving around it and the TV is black, so, you really don't see it unless it is turned on.
