this. We are using 3/4" metal spindles in the same style (even though our stairs are 11 1/4"). We could not get wider metal spindles without having them
oh that is very helpful. You did a lot of work !! Later I was looking at spindles which had 1 central post with a design using 2 posts - 1 each side -

must have "flanked" then the treads should stick out beyond the flanking metal, and be quite thick (3-3.5", really)
