I'm assuming you're referring to the fireplace elsewhere in the project; stone was used in addition to a steel surround that was chemically treated to give it a dark, coffee-like patina.
The walnut stair treads have a simple finish; meaning they were not stained. The steel balusters were chemically treated to achieve their darkened patina.

Can the chemical finishing process be done after the stairs are manufactured?
Hi There, Thank you for the lovely compliment. The stair stringer is blackened steel ( a chemical finishing process). The wall behind is venetian plaster with a raking light that gives the wall an amazing glow.
