We are installing similar stairs. The wood boxes were glued to the metal treads, but now the wood is splitting and joints are separating. Can it be caused by temperature differences between the wood and metal, or moisture trapped inside, or what?

Excellent trim detail. Can you tell me what profiles were used on the door casing and on the baseboards? Thanks.
