Great question! You stain the entire floor the lighter color first. Then tape off the pattern of your choosing, helps to create a template to reuse. Then stain the pattern a shade darker. Hope that helps!

I have lazy builder 'texture' all over the house- the kind they smack all over the walls to hide their tape seams. You can still even see where the screws are in places, these half inch raised spots where the sheets were joined, so the texturing isn't fooling
