of the concrete. There was no skimming or concrete. Everything there was in the formwork. Again, a fabulous job welding and not damaging the concrete.

The stair design is what I want
It helps to plan ahead when you build stairs like this... obviously.
this stair's 4-foot cantilever is made possible by steel's tensile strength and by welding the treads to embedded steel plates in the concrete wall.

How do the building codes allow you to build a stair like this without a gaurdrail on the open side?
How was this stair constructed? Does it have a steel structure that holds the stairs concealed in
similar stairs. The wood boxes were glued to the metal treads, but now the wood is splitting and joints are separating. Can it be caused by temperature differences between the wood and metal, or moisture trapped inside, or what?
have a stair project in Illinois and would like to know how the treads are attached to the wall - using steel embedded in concrete wall? did you use a stair 'system' or all made custom?
floors, the stairs would be select grade. Hope that helps you :-)
The stairs were inspected and passed City inspection and met all local codes. The original design had a glass panel attached to the treads and ceiling, the owners opted to remove the panel for better airflow and openness

n was unique for this project in that the client was also the builder with a keen desire to incorporate LEED-centric principles to the design process. Questions2
Are the stair treads glass or acrylic?
Those stairs are 4' wide. To go to 6' the glass would need to become quite a bit thicker, like 2 1/2". Other than that, other elements could remain the same
glass stairs on metal frame (cheaper)
I like how the stairs are glass
Very good design, same idea came to me; metallic frame more safe for floating stairs, better if you can hide it.
Of course, these stairs are also ideal when there's an adjacent view and source of natural light
when the stair isn't all glass, light streams deep into the interior. Even a steel stringer, whether bent to form a ziggurat shape like this one, or as a more traditional diagonal, allows for transparency and that sculptural quality these stairs are known for.
