A transitional house falls between traditional and contemporary — it is often a traditional home that is evolving toward an updated, trendier look. Transitional home decor takes a classic foundation and revamps it with popular finishes, colors and materials, though it lacks the bold, contrasting quality of contemporary spaces. Transitional homes stick with neutral colors (especially gray), minimal ornamentation, simple lines and small, trendy details. These spaces are often hard to identify, since by definition they mix two different styles.

This room is a combined laundry and bathroom. It was previously dark and had no windows or ventilation; the addition of a large operable skylight floods the space with light and fresh air. A new vanity cabinet and wide sink allows two faucets in what was previously a single sink. Photography by Andrew Hyslop. Architecture and Construction by Rock Paper Hammer.
