The staircase is built inside a small room, which is an alcove off the main circulation path. The treads and risers are oak to match the floor. The structure and balusters are Douglas Fir to match the house trim. They are open enough to see much of the house as you're using the stairs. There is a bed/seat built in below the second landing.

The south side of the living room is a Rumford fireplace, with a Douglas Fir mantle and pine cabinets. The face & hearth is quarry tile that matches the tile in the kitchen. The ceiling is built in a wood vault with battens like a traditional boat. The living room is separated from the kitchen with a plaster arch.

At the top of the stairs on the second floor, the stair hall is enlarged into a library. The books are stored in built-in Pine shelves and in the dormer facing the Pacific Ocean is a built in bed for reading and naps. It is raised one step above the floor to improve the views. The bed had storage build-in for quilts and comforters

The transition from the entry to the adjacent hall is a 36" thick plaster arch. The exposed beam and decking ceiling doesn't easily accommodate lighting, so the hall uses wall sconces, around which family pictures are arranged.
