Love the bike store idea, unfortunately my bike is never that clean. Even after washing the tyres hold the water... I still think I'd be getting it in the ear for dirtying the floor or the wall.

Really good suggestions, Joanna, for those who are fortunate enough to have an utility room.

We managed to squeeze one in the basement; it's small, but practical. Because it's pretty narrow, I asked the builder to make a large niche in the wall so I can store detergents there. I'd also like to have a frame built around the appliances, I just don't seem to find a good carpenter at the moment.

What you can't see, and I recommend it as a great solution for stack-up appliances, is the pull-out shelf in between the washing machine and the dryer; I can put the laundry basket there and fold the clothes straight out of the dryer. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wpro-Stacking-With-Shelf-White/dp/B0048PF2HE
