spate9277 We have a pot rack that is also a pendent lamp over the island. So we decided that since I'm the shortest, we'd set the height so that when I reach up, I can actually lift a pot from the bottom. And then we made sure my hubby wouldn't be bonking his head on the pans. The best advice I can give you is to be sure and use a pot rack hung from some kind of adjustable system. Ours is on chains, oval, with the lights in the middle. You will need to fiddle with the height so that your tallest and shortest person can use it. We didn't count our son in the mix as he's growing and he already uses a step ladder in the kitchen anyway. WE do love it. I have tried to use the vessel sinks and just end up drenched! When we reno the master bath I think I'll have them put one sink down lower and another higher for the hubs.

Also, we're going to take out the bar height counter and replace it with single large counter and counter height chairs. All the other short folks will know the feeling of trying to climb up on barstools or having our feet dangle and then fall asleep. I never did understand the bar table craze. I'm refinishing the kitchen table and the top will be done in food safe oil so I can use it as a food prep surface, rolling dough, chopping veggies, etc. That's the way our great-grandma's worked, the kitchen table was an extra work surface.

great article Charmean super info...
re: measurement for a Chandelier to hold the scale of the room:
our formula... measure the WIDTH of the room in FEET multiply by 2, then add 2 Then convert to inches = the MINIMUM required DIAMETER for that space.
Ex: a 10 ft room x 2 = 20 plus 2 = 22" inches is the minimum Diameter needed.
Any fixture chosen above that measure will give you more impact/drama in the space.

I was always told that the right rug for a dining table and chairs should be large enough to still be under the chairs' legs when pulled for sitting.

My pet peeve in decorating is CORDS.

Picture lights are charming. I love when a room is lit by a photo or work of art, but can't stand dangling cords, especially brown cords against white (WHY are the cords on such items so often dark?). What to do? get a piece of cord molding that is hollow, affix it to the wall centered beneath the picture frame, prime and paint it to match your wall.

Dangling TV cords: wall-mounted TVs are great, until the cords begin to clutter. If you can't have the wall wired with a recessed box behind where the TV will hang, pull all the cords to one corner, not the center, and use cord molding. I also can't figure out why the U.S. market does not offer vertical DVD players, they're available in Europe, Asia and Australia. When you begin acquiring TV components, look for those that can link with Bluetooth.

Finally, lamp cords. If you have a stretch of floor where the lamp cord is visible, paint it to match the flooring. If you have a lamp cord running across a table, paint it to match the table-top. And if you have a ceiling mount chandelier or swag mounted lamp, splice the extra cord. If the chain is ugly (and they almost always are) have a sleeve fashioned. A length of fabric that is 3-4 inches wide that closes around the cord with Velcro works great. Choose a blend, something that can be shaken out, vacuumed or hand-washed if it becomes dusty.
