We installed solar as are energy bills are high and our location (N. California) is optimal for solar panel ROI. It's been saving us about $3,000 per year for the last 4 years. Before you decide, the zone you live and current energy costs would definitely be a factor before investing in solar - and how long you plan to live in your home to pay for itself. If you have a choice between two homes, one solar, one not...I'd definitely pick the solar home.

I love the look of the cabinets, and the backsplash is nice as well. I agree and think that the floor draws attention away from the cabinets and the backsplash. Maybe add a throw rug in that area that will compliment the backsplash.

Can you remove the glass shades on your pedants? If so, you might be able to simply change out the current ones for something a little more cottagey or vinatge-y at a really budget friendly price. (love your toaster, btw :D )

Love groveraxle's ideas. May not be classic shabby chic/cottage, just call it updated chic.

The mosaic backsplash in warmer tones will compliment the cabinets and pull everything in together nicely.

Thanks for input. I have attached pics Ito look I was going for just an eg of another kitchen with splash backs done in stone that matches countertop. I could go mosaic but then I won't be able to do walls as far too pricey and I think will look busy. With stone I can do my walls as well.

A glass tile backsplash would be a wonderful addition to your cosy kitchen. Depending on if you want a pop of color or something more neutral, there are endless possibilities!

Hi Ragnhild, A chimney is needed to vent a fireplace, wood stove, or NOT-High efficiency furnace. If nothing is left that is venting the chimney, you will need an architect or structural specialist to determine if the chimney is structurally necessary to the house, and what would be required to remove it.

Our 40year old house has 2 chimney's that are no longer used -first the oil furnace was moved from the basement to the garage by the original owners, then we replaced it with a high efficiency furnace that vent out a plastic pipe located about 6 ft above the bottom of the furnace. We don't feel any need to remove the old chimneys.

As for dishwashers-I love ours-it makes it much easier to keep the kitchen tidy-and it washes the dishes! I prefer the look of the ones with a cabinet matching front-but for our house kitchen reno we went with the cheapest ikea dishwasher-its been hooked up and working great for 2 weeks now. (panel ready would have cost more than double)

above all enjoy your new place!

A glass tile would look very modern with your kitchen. There are several types of glass Aspect that you kind find matching outlet covers with.

Be sure to let your counter fabricator know that you only want the counter and not a 4" backsplash out of counter material. Then add your tile or what ever type of BS you want going from cabinets down to counter.

My advise is to move the switches and go with your original plan. It's an easy fix/patch and someone's mistake to fix. You shouldn't have to compromise your plan over a switch!! Go with your vision.

A champagne or copper tile may add a nice contrast to your counter tops. The Aspect 3''x6'' tiles would look great, and be an easy DIY project!

Depends on the brick I think; a less expensive trick if you prefer brick is to use seconds of varying colours and paint them. If though the bricks are expensive and all one colour then I would leave them.

It's a completely personal choice. It can look great painted and outstanding unpainted. Like most decorating, it depends on the look you're going for and what fits your personality.

I would keep the cabinets, if you wanted to paint them it would be an easy budget fix. You could look into adding a backsplash to the kitchen. This will transform your kitchen! The Rings backsplash panel in Antique Bronze would add a nice contrast in your kitchen!

I would just change the Knobs to a more modern looking ones like a stainless steel pulls, change the countertops to Silestone, metallic or glass backsplash and it'll look like a new kitchen! good luck!

Our glass Aspect in Morning Dew could help you with the color accent you are going for. There are also beautiful bronze and copper tiles that may work as well!

I agree with other posters who are saying that granite doesn't really lend itself to a blue tile backsplash. Stick to a cream color, either glass tiles or a subway ceramic. If you must do a pattern with it, us a metallic accent, or have the subway tiles laid in a herringbone, especially over the cooktop. You can always add a fabric that has a bit of blue, which will be much easier to change than a backsplash.
