Large pieces of Artwork. Maybe classic black and white family photos. Anything that brings height (tall vases, etc). I would draw attention to it, not try to hide it :) Hope this gives you some design inspiration!

Don't be scared of Pattern. And I like the idea, because you change it out for the season or when you want a quick change..like with pillows!

Barbarossa, in the olden days, before computers, I was a textile designer & hand painted designs to be engraved on rollers! I have had a long career in the home furnishings industry in one way or another & my current position is all about beautiful (and some not so) wallcoverings & fabrics. TY

I often find myself in rooms with herringbone-patterned floors in Europe, and recently was wondering to myself if the pattern was 'invented' to use up small bits of wood - cheaper than long, wide planks from tall trees.

Coming from the Pacific Northwest of the USA, I tend to think that plank floors are a sign of having spent a lot of money, and that the longer and wider the planks (especially longer), the more likely that the floor was made from mature, old-growth trees. On 'This Old House' I've noticed that often new hardwood floors have short pieces while old hardwood floors have very long planks, because of the availability of very tall, old-growth trees a hundred or more years ago when the houses were built. But here in Central Europe, it seems that a hundred or more years ago, people went in for 'parquet flooring' in a herringbone pattern using very small pieces of wood. Herringbone-patterned wood floors are considered very elegant and desirable. But I can't help but look at them as cheap (despite the labor-intensiveness of putting one in) because of my bias toward long, wide planks as a sign of quality, old-growth wood.

Does anyone know if using the more difficult herringbone pattern was a sort of 'compensation' for using cheaper, short pieces of wood?

I got the apple at an accessory store in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The stores name is Tadou. They have a lot of great and interesting pieces...I just loved the apple and knew it had to be in the picture. Thanks. Annie
