lefty47 HI -- Ok, now I can see and understand what you are doing .Yes, it is a good thing that feature is going and gone . I think it dated the house . Kind of Miami Vice . I think boxing in those round front columns top to bottom will go with the house and up date the style . Not sure what should be done ,if anything with the curved walls around that upper window . That might be to much construction costs to change that .

tcufrog I have a compromise suggestion-cork floors. They are quieter, softer and warmer underfoot than hardwood. They are also antimicrobial and don't attract dust plus they are easier to clean than carpet since, unlike carpet, they don't trap dirt. They also look really nice. I recently put them in my two young sons' bedrooms because of their allergies and they and I love them.

If I put recessed cans on the right or a wall mount, will it look the same at night ? And I'm not planning on putting recessed on the left side of the house so that is why I say itÉ's going to be asymmetrical.

OnePlan I have a cedar hot tub 5' diameter - just enough for two ! We heat it by burning wood and garden rubbish in the burner ! So in my opinion its greener than an electric one. We empty it and re fill it on the day we want to use it ! So the water is fresh each time ! Takes an hour to fill it and 4 hours to heat it ! So that's the only down side really ! But you can get a gas chofu heater to speed things up a bit!!!!

MUSE Design Love, love, love my huge master suite on 1st floor. But i am retired and have had unexpected health issues - don't know what i would have done if BR had been upstairs when i was in a wheelchair! Here are some things to consider: depending on what metro area you're in if you put MBR on 1st floor you are increasing the footprint of the house and there are many extra costs associated with that - increases amount of roofing which is a major cost of a house, for instance. And will you put only 2 BR upstairs or increase the overall count to 4 BR? If only 2 BR does that throw off the balance of the house, huge downstairs and small upper floor? It's definitely more efficient and thus less costly to put all BRs upstairs. If you increase 1st floor footprint will you do crawlspace or basement under that space? Basement makes everything more accessible but costs more. In many parts of the country basements are not included. I would definitely put a laundry on the same floor as the MBR. In my area, MBRs on 1st floor are rare and thus houses with them are in very great demand.
Hope this helps.

MUSE Design Here are some things to keep in mind:
- if you put a cabinet beside the fireplace the room will have a lot of visual weight on that side; you'll need something to balance it on the opposite wall - perhaps side panel drapes beside the windows? (I seem to remember that there are windows opposite the fireplace?)
- you will need the shelves behind the cabinets to fit your AV equipment - for me that's a receiver, a blue ray player, a dvd player, a set top box (for signal from tv provider) and all the cables. THese machines are typically much deeper than 12 inches. Measure the ones you have and be sure to leave room for cables going into the devices.
- you will need to either have a remote that can penetrate closed doors (which is what i have; cost $300) or open the doors so that your remote can access the signal sensor near the equipment, exposing the equipment and cabling. Alternatively you can cut a hole in the cabinet so the sensor wire can go through the hole and the sensor can sit out in the open. Or perhaps you can buy a TV that will capture the signal and send it to the other devices - not available when i did it 4 years ago.
- decide if you want the tv on an articulating arm which will need to support the weight of the tv you have today and a larger one if that is in your future or whether it will be immovable attached to the back of the cabinet. Ours is on an articulating arm and we had the studs behind the cabinet specially reinforced to assure they would support all the weight. The articulating arm allows the TV to move past the fireplace mantle and be adjusted for any viewer in the room at various angles. And then it can be tucked back into the shelf space.
- if you put the tv over the fireplace you need to consider its height. This is generally an awkward angle to hold your head to watch tv unless your head is supported by a neck cushion. Check to see if your sofa has the right support for this. We bought a sofa that had the perfect support (in my husband's den his TV is over the fireplace.)
- if you put the tv over the fireplace you need to be concerned with how hot the tv will get if the fireplace is on. Heat can damage your tv. This is generally not a problem if you have a sufficient mantle that directs heat out into the room and not straight up into the tv.
- you may want wiring to go inside the wall in which case you'll need to have someone open the wall install wires and then patch the wall. Otherwise you'll have wires going from the TV on the wall down into the cabinet and be visible.
Hope this helps.

mjmstankus Hi Cecilia, I would like to address your entry storage issue. It looks like your front door opens directly into the living room. If you have room on the living room side you can put 2 units that would be used in a mud room-hooks on top half and storage drawer or cubbies on the bottom half. Face the hook/drawer side toward the entry and the blank side toward the living room. It will provide storage and define the entry.

Laura Smith I think it's a lovely mirror, but it does overwhelm the space. And cleaning a mirror like that in a bathroom will be problematic. If you spray cleaner on it, it will seep behind the little pieces and quickly ruin the mirror from the back. Mirrors not designed for bathroom use don't hold up well in the steam & frequent cleaning needed. I'd move it to a non spatter location where it can shine for a long time. And in it's place I'd put a mirror on swivels like the Kensington or Hayden mirrors from Pottery Barn.

dlbconductor Depending on the porch door: removing the curtain, painting the porch door the white of the mantel, and then installing white plantation shutters on the door might give a more balanced look. The door and the fireplace would visually become a unit and the fireplace would not look as off-centered or as crowded.
You might also consider painting the picture frame white. In our kitchen, we painted a frame the color of the cabinets to help tie the picture into the room and it worked very well. Matt's idea of two narrow accessories is very good advice. Avoid the temptation of putting small knickknacks on the mantel. Leave it bare except for the two tall accessories.
I have seen another approach where the mantel was extended all the way to the left and a decorative fire tool was hung on the wall under the extended mantel. The picture was then hung centered on the wall.
Good luck on your project!
