Images of Brilliant! lighting work have appeared in Fine Homebuilding magazine, as well as Cape Cod Life, Custom Home, Solar Today, and Vineyard Style magazines.

Spaces (inside or out) where we spend lots of time want to be adjustable to our varied desires, needs, or moods. So light wants to be projected into those spaces through a variety of means, or more simply, by utilizing layers of light.

Brilliant! Lighting design experiences include lighting modern to colonial, and contemporary to victorian styles; Timber-framed as well as stick-framed spaces, both residential and commercial; Exterior living spaces and landscapes too. Plus, we work with the most current crop of energy-efficient LED and CFL lamps.

Performance lighting in the arts (dance, theater, opera, live music and video) & special events over the past 40 years shapes many of the design approaches used and informs choices in each project.

In all cases, experience teaches us that the collaboration between partners is of the greatest importance, and of the greatest joy. The design process is at its' most successful when many voices can be heard, then a discerning eye and deeply mindful understanding can be applied to reach the best of all possible solutions.

Please be sure to also consider fan total diameter / reach of the blades in relation to placement of any recessed. If too close together you'll get a 'strobing' effect as the fan rotates within the proximity of the light beam spread.
Yet another reason to consider working with a lighting professional.

On the recessed, There has been no discussion of what is above the porch (open roof?, heated space above?, etc.) but please consider the Lighting Science Group's Glimpse LED http://www.lsgc.com/fixtures/glimpse/
This is an excellent choice, both to protect against future moisture / mold issues and from an energy consumption point-of-view.

my concern is that with out a light over the center of the table the cans will be creating shadow. i would put a nice fixture there and not a fan.

But a fan with lights directly over the dining table would be okay, right? I'm in Dallas and fans every few feet are a necessity! ;)

Cove up lighting can be achieved with a variety of fixtures - LED tape, LED rope or strips, rail systems, T5 flourescents, etc.
Fixture choice and cove design / shape / size will all impact the overall success of the lighting design. Your lighting designer, interior designer or architectural designer can help you get it right.
Check fixtures at iLight Plexineon, Stone Lighting, WAC Lighting, Bruck Lighting, and Edge Lighting among many, to get started.

This appears to be the Excel chandelier from Roll and Hill, based in Brooklyn NY US. http://www.rollandhill.com/products/Excel-Chandelier/#
They make some beautifully hand-crafted fixtures.

The kitchen requires etiquette light planning.
You would need one main kitchen light source which is normally a recessed lamp (or two or three, depending on the size of the kitchen) to light up the entire space.

Second you would need down lights above working surfaces: under cabinet (and above counter top) lights, which today would be mostly LEDs, and kitchen Island down lights, etc.

If you have a dining table in the kitchen you can use a "mini" chandlier, i.e a fixture with a few lamps in a circle. This is not an up light, rather an all-around lighting.

This planning is called layered lighting plan. We have an article in our lighting blog here:
