Portal Design Inc Lisa, obviously the roof needs to drain, and meet the building code for roof R-value. You cannot complete a house without meeting code. While roofs like this look flat from the street they are actually sloped towards the roof drains. This can either be achieved by creating a slope within the roof joists, or by creating slope with roofing insulation that is tapered.

Blackfish Homes Ltd. Once you move to a flat roof in BC the insulation requirements drop from R40 to R28. I highly recommend the use of 2# spray foam to achieve this over batt insulation, thus preventing the need to cross ventilate the roof assembly. As Portal has mentioned above we then use tapered 2x material on top of the joists to slope all the roof area to the outside edges to be picked up by the drains.

goelks Neophyte to all this... And yes, I am grateful that my own remodeled home does have authenticity and sad that similar nearby homes have been modified so that the outside gives no clue as to what is on the inside. But, and this is a question only, what am I to do with the sincere wish to someday either live in a very old clapboard house barely decorated in an extreme minimalist modern style or in an extreme minimalist modern structure similar the perfect (in my opinion) Sweeney Lake House pictured above but sparsely decorated with overstuffed chairs and couches and beautiful old rugs? Are there any architectural principles that can help me understand how to articulate and actualize these disparate but synchronous wants?

Lisa A yeah, those doors would NEVER be fully opened. It reminds me of our Mexico trip where you could hear a pin drop in the hotel bathroom because shutters were the only separation in a window area. Not really conducive to anything private if you know what I mean.... (I love the aesthetic though)

Portal Design Inc Decorators White is a great standard white color. It's not too grey or too cold. All the white in this house is Decorators White.

Portal Design Inc The roof awning structure is welded aluminum, custom designed for this application. The frosted panel material is a product named Deglas. It comes is sheets of various widths and lengths and is a product designed to be UV resistant, meaning that it will not yellow like a fiberglass material does.

Portal Design Inc Hi Mehgan. I'd advise against painting the wall behind the bed the same color. You could try painting it a darker shade of the paint color that matches the duvet. That, or paint a wall that is not directly in contact with the bed/duvet such as the wall opposite the foot of the bed.
