Make Your Own Barn-Style Door — in Any Size You Need

Low ceilings or odd-size doorways are no problem when you fashion a barn door from exterior siding and a closet track Full Story

I needed a door for my kitchen, but needed the ventilation of an open doorway. It's location does not allow for a swinging door. Barn door was the answer. The track from HD only cost about $15. I built a framework and used hardware cloth (wire in tiny squares). It's crude, but in the throes of reno and urgent need, it works. A coat of glossy, bright aqua paint helps! Later, it will be used outdoors and I'll replace it with better. Barn doors can be any size and design, and built to fit, which isn't always available in a standard door.

even tho barn doors were on someone's list in the ideabook 'what decorative items do you hate the most,' seems like the perfect solution for our bedroom.
A little bit narrow, bright hallway leads 25 ft into the master bath with no door, next to a beautiful window bedroom side.

The problem? Sometimes I have jags on not sleeping well and can't get back to sleep in under an hour or two. And sometimes when my husband showers, the noise wakes me. I hate asking him to shower in the other room (plus it's on the other water heater with 2 teenage boys, so mornings with 3 showers can be dicey).

The 8-9ft high doorway means it must be custom, but can't be pricey (pick your battles). Don't want to block the window. The other side holds a long, short dresser so a reg door can't stay open there. Don't want to entirely close it off.

So if we make (oh thank you so much for this ideabook, Christina!) a barn door, it will block most of the noise, can slide behind the dresser, and look half way decent. Bedroom decidingly not in the barn motif but maybe something almost sculptural like staggered piece of beautiful wood would be nice. I have saved a houzz image like that in one of my ideabooks.

And I won't have to throw my husband out every morning!

Thank you so much for posting this project. I have been yearning for proper built-ins for our family room for years now but always thought it would be cost prohibitive. Your project has shown just how approachable it is.
You did a wonderful job on the design and finish. It looks like it costs 10 x what you paid.
I am now energized to get ours done.

The wainscoting on the wall is actually faux board and batten. I just placed trim pieces directly on the wall to create the pattern I was looking for. Everything was then painted white to look like board and batten.
