Clark & Zook Architects, LLC Thank you for your comment! These heart of pine logs were from a house built in 1820's so they are old. They were cleaned off, but not stained, or polished in any way. They were not blasted as that would ruin the patina. The original house was demolished in late 1990's, and the logs sat on a piece of property in Cartersville Georgia, about 50 miles away from where this house was built (or re-built). Many of the logs have the original nails and other holes from bugs, etc. I think before they were re-assembled, the contractor brushed the face with a stiff wire brush, to remove dirt/debris.

Clark & Zook Architects, LLC One other thing...you can read all about the house in Becky Harris' great article on houzz.com, which was written a few months back...

cdg4681 Thank you! So just one more question - the front exterior log wall as well did not need any finish over the log?
Clark & Zook Architects, LLC Rather than expose the old logs to the weather the owners wanted to put natural siding over the logs. That siding is sometimes called "hog pen" siding, but I call it rough hewn "wavy" siding. It was specialty milled at a local saw mill in North Georgia. The sides of the house (where the stone chimneys are located) have the "wavy" siding, but the section under the porch has the exposed logs.

HAYES ARCHITECTURE INTERIORS Absolutely, listening to our clients is one of the most important "tools" or "resources" in our toolbox. By actively listening and engaging with our clients, we can help guide them to what their vision is. Thank you for this article.

Studio One Architecture It is ironic that many Architects cannot afford to travel! I can only travel through books and extensive research, not by hopping on a plane and leaving my clients to fend for themselves. As Architects we are also Real Estate consultants, Lawyers, Psychologists, sales people, sometimes babysitters! The clients' experience in building is defined by their relationship with their Architect . They need to be nurtured through the process as much as possible. Being well travelled does not necessarily make an Architect good. But I agree that listening to the client is a key and overriding factor in the process.

healthyandfit What a lovely home! Could you tell me what color was used on the siding and the trim?

Clark & Zook Architects, LLC We love this door! The door is an old one that was purchased at Architectural Accents in Atlanta. The stain is natural to the wood of the door.

Clark & Zook Architects, LLC The wall color is a Sherwin Williams, Universal Khaki. Trim colors and accents were Ben Moore historic colors. The logs and chinking are the material colors, so they are natural. We're glad you like the house, it's one of our favorite projects.

Clark & Zook Architects, LLC This door and sidelights/transom came from the first house that was built in Powder Springs, Georgia, in 1866 (post Civil War era). It was salvaged by the owners, disassembled, stripped, re-stained, re-glazed, and reassembled for this project in Talking Rock. So I guess its not an "off the shelf" item. I can talk with the contractor to see if he knows other places that being razed in an effort to find something historic for your job.
You could try Architectural Accents, in Atlanta...that may be a place to start?
