Donated our old kitchen cabinets and laminate counter tops to Second Chance in Baltimore, MD. The contractor did not charge us extra for removal of the cabinets in tact and Second Chance came to our house and picked them up. Second Chance is an amazing organization http://www.secondchanceinc.org/ It gives people, furniture, and architectural pieces a second chance. They retrain, reclaim and renew. We stopped by their store two months after we had donated our cabinets and the cabinets had sold. Our electric company paid us $50 to take our antiquated refrigerator. I would call that demolition a success.

carolbrandywine - you mentioned about putting items out "on the curb" for anyone to pick up free. An excellent idea as many folks love a bargain! The only time we found that didn't seem to work was with appliances (i.e. an older, clean fridge and later a washer and dryer). Eventually we put a sign on the appliances saying $25 or offers. They were always gone by the morning.
