Good luck getting everything itemized. One, there are markups charged (often justifiably so. After all, pros often can do or get things you can't, and itemizing time on the phone tracking down that faucet you saw in some magazine is just not gonna happen. And deserves compensation). Two, no one is going to give that much information about their business considering it could be used by competitors as you're shopping around to undercut them. There is definite line between disclosure and protecting one's business. If you ran a restaurant, you wouldn't broadcast your food and labor costs to anyone.

As for why people don't disclose their budget right away, it's probably because if they say they have budgeted $30K, the pro is likely to spend $30K. In other words, you'll never spend less than the number you say out loud. That may not be true for all pros, but it's harder to find a pro coming in under a stated number than it is a needle in a haystack.

One thing I would disagree with..... I am completely comfortable saying that costs/budgets from architects and designers are not reliable. I meet clients everyday that are upset because the actual cost to build a home they designed is way over what the architect told them.... having a builder on your team during design gives you an expert on current pricing/costs

It is a 3/4 inch solid red birch. 5" planks, installed and then hand scraped in place and stained a dark brown color.
