Hi and thanks for your inquiry. The wall color is Bennington Grey by Benjamin Moore. The bookcase I designed was built for me by my cabinet maker Mitchell's Woodworking. The intent was more of a display cabinet for collectables.

A good interior designer just enhances who you are and works as a collaborator. Unfortunate you didn't utilize some professional help along with your architect.

The homeowner is clearly talented in bringing her design ideas to an old home for a modern family. Kudos to her for her vision.

I love old homes and this one has a great new family who will take care of it. Preserving the good parts, updating the parts no modern family could tolerate and giving it such gorgeous interior design is what we wish for ALL old houses. They are our heritage and this family respected that while making it their own.

A designer is not able to bill every hour they work. In fact, for every billable hour, there's generally another free hour! It's billing, invoices, minute grungy detail work you'd be hard pressed to even imagine. So , while you may earn not close to that per every hour of your labor and expertise, neither do we! When you put in your x many hours at a hospital, or doctors office, you are paid for all of them, or you are salaried and undoubtedly have benefits such as paid vacation, medical plans, employee FICA contribution etc. A great many of us are self employed and provide those things for ourselves. Real hours of work in this field differ greatly from billable hours, and is often why designers don't like the hourly method of billing, preferring to work off a sale of merchandise method. I recently met a young designer starting out, whose husband pointed out she was actually working for more a minimum wage as he rarely even SAW her!
Not to mention, if a two hour design consultation, for 300.00, put someone on a path to the space of their desires, or gave them an idea for a super function they never even considered , or saved them ten times their 300.00 investment in mistakes and the trip to "Sorryville"........? Most would consider that scenario an incredible value, and value is the operative word. : )

I'm not sure if my experience with designers is typical everywhere, but I prefer to work with those who also act a a general contractor on a renovation, or are experienced enough to, and preferably with reliable contacts. I generally find those designers to be worth every dollar as opposed to someone who has good ideas but cant take it, or the customer, to job completion.
Even though we now only offer cabinet painting, between my daughter (who is in design school) and I ( who have been a general contractor for years) are able to offer value added service, advice, contacts and a scope and sequence included in our painting service. It usually adds no more than an hour to a full kitchen reno, of which we are one aspect, but the customer makes less novice mistakes, saves money and time and by becoming pre informed and thereby central to the choreography of the job, empowered and grateful.
Our fees are competitive while our service is above average, and therefore in demand.
Price becomes the least discussed component of most quotes or consults we do.
Once again, I suggest that relational focused service, rather than service focused business are the base line determinate of what our time is worth.

I don't know the measurements but I suppose it comes down to how you like to sit - do you like couches with pillow backs for instance or a tight back.
