Covering 'natural' wood -- Hiluhilu's grass cloth idea is good for covering back of dark wood, but any fabric will do. For a formal room I used 'on-sale' Thai silk - great shimmer and reflection. For a bedroom I used a printed fabric that 'matched' (bad word these days!). Neither of these choices may match rustic decor, but there are plenty of fabrics that would. Textured upholstery fabric remnants work well, too!

My point really is that fabric put up with white craft fabric glue, or even Elmer's regular old glue works so quickly and easily. And washes off around edges.

Just put glue on wall, press down rough-cut fabric, use a razor blade to trim (presuming fabric doesn't unravel easily on edges). Smooth with flat of hands to squeeze out glue. (I didn't even measure very closely and still looked good!)

So when natural grainy oak is back in style :-), or you have to move and turn over property in good shape/as was, then it's easy to return to shelves to natural state. BTW, if keeping natural wood shelves/exposed edges, these seem to look better with fabric than paint. A professional-looking job, done quickly, easily and pretty cheaply. And it's fun hunting for fabrics!

To msbebb44: How about using the gorgeous red on the poster near the bookcases, then utilizing some of the white items as suggested. White shells and whitewashed driftwood if you like beachy, or a graceful white enamel ware pitcher for a country look, or a more angled vase for modern look.

ChickieD, you can place a bid with the contingency that your bid only stands if the home passes inspection; that way, your bid is no longer binding if something is wrong that the seller is not willing to negotiate on. It's nuts to pay for an inspection on every home you're considering bidding on.

I am one of those people that find too many things wrong (the realtors cringe when they see me coming) - the clients get "buy it " fever and stop taking you along. Then they call you up to tell them what is wrong so you can fix it after they buy it. Doing things right is not easy or fast. Try to not buy a pre-owned home less then ten years old - that is when the real troubles begin to be come "obvious".

You can find coffee tables that have a hydronic lift to raise it to be a dining table. Very cool. Also an area rug defines a space, large or small. Use screens to hide heaters or AC or as a room divider.

Hi KM designs.
I just read your comments regarding preaching small houses. I for in heave no choice in that, I ,I've her in Japan and the houses here are relatively small and it took me years and as a matter if fact still is taking me a while to get used to the idea. I've wrecked my head and gathered advices here, there and everywhere on what type of sofa to get, on interiors, and somehow thanks to HOUZZZ.COM I'm getting what I need...but since you're more of a pro on small houses how about some points to add to my little frustration, I will be enclosing a picture of my living room,,hope I take it well enough.
Thank you so much!!

Adding natural elements is wonderful, but placing them where they will NOT need be to be constantly cleaned, would be the more sensible way to do it!

We live in an older home without A/C, so we leave our windows open at night to cool off. Since our bedroom has five! doors, furniture tends to be under the double hung windows, making them difficult to access to open and close. The room with the bed in the middle of the windows made me think of that.

There is a lot to love about this home. I love the repurposing that as done. I think though that there might be some chilly winter nights with only fireplace heating.
