Looks like the niches have lighting! Get different sculptures (but in the same family) that are slightly opaque or transparent so it looks like the pieces are illuminated from within.

Really do not like niches .. I would eliminate them. When we built our home 3 years ago, the builder's plans called for niches and plant shelves. I had them all removed.

Consult a local artist and have custom stained glass panels installed. You won't have to dust, paint, or otherwise secure loose objects. It appears they already have electrical for backlight. Just a matter of stained glass design with consideration for venting (lighting will put out heat).

First issue is that all of your furniture is lined up against a wall! Create a 'floating' seating area with a love seat, coffee table, and if you have room, a couple of small chairs; OR add a chaise with a floor lamp to create a cozy (sexy) reading area; OR a bench in front of the bed; you probably have room for a desk/vanity table as well.
GET RID OF THE WINDOW TREATMENT VALENCES! They block great windows. Try sheer window panels in a jaquard print - either monochromatic or tone on tone. They're graceful and soft. If you need light control, add roller blackout shades that can be rolled out of sight when not needed.
REPLACE THE CEILING FAN with a sparkling chandelier, and eliminate the other ceiling fixtures. Layer your lighting by adding floor lamps, table lamps, and perhaps mount swing arm lamps on either side of the bed for reading.
PAINT THE WALLS a soft yellow, blue, or lavendar - or go bright with coral. Select some upholstered furniture in a soft print, and continue it as a coverlet for the bed.
There's plenty more... but this is a good start.

As far as the windows go, you were questioning whether to get blinds and shutters. There is quite a big difference in pricing between 2" wood blinds and shutters. Wood blinds are definitely the more reasonably priced option if price is an issue. If you need blackout, since you evidentially sleep during the day, blackout honeycombs are your best choice. On the sliding glass door, I would put a blackout lined drape, tying it to the color of your bedding. And on the two single windows, you can add a valance over the blinds or shades in the same fabric to tie it all together. As far as the woodwork, your question was whether to paint them white or leave them stained. Since all of your furniture is stained, I think that having painted trim would offer some interest to the room so that everything is not so "matchy matchy". I would paint the chair rail and the trim around the closet door too.

Total kitchen renovation - Removed a wall separating the kitchen from the dining/living area, added custom mahogany shaker-style cabinetry, painted the area around the cabinets a graphite gray that brings out the grain of the wood. Had to drop the ceiling over the dinette area in order to center the chandelier. The island is wallpapered in a 'crinkled aluminum foil' paper to tie in the dining area with the new stainless appliances. The air duct was painted graphite gray to tie in the foyer ceiling with the kitchen and through to the living room wall/media center.

An all white kitchen provides a serene oasis. Granite counter tops with black, deep pinot noir red, and shades of wheat add strong accent colors to balance the bold red walls of the apartment. Floors are wood grained porcelain tiles.

There's nothing more cozy and functional than an eat-in kitchen. A bistro table and chairs accommodates 1-4 for breakfast and a light lunch. A red wrought iron bistro set with custom cushions, red accessories, and a bright poster finish the space.

Pat's idea to use two paint textures would work wonderfully! Try Ralph Lauren's suede finishes alternating with a Benjamin Moore metallic. Tie the two together by covering the wall with a transparent glaze.

You're quite welcome Allan. I have an account with York and Seabrook wallpapers. Let me know if you'd be interested in finding an actual wallpaper for your room.

Coral is the perfect hue for a bright and happy guest bedroom with a paled down shade for the ensuite bath. I used coral on the walls with cheerful bed linens and bright accessories in the guest room while in the master was toned down. The rest of the color palette for the one of my newer projects includes tomato red, white, green, and yellow. Check out “Bold & Unexpected” on Houzz bit.ly/1kEXMlM

My favorite color in the world is any shade of aqua/teal/bluegreen, etc. And coral is such a beautiful compliment to that (even shown in this article). It's just a color combo that puts you in a good mood!! :-)
