Iconic Architecture: 10 Must-Know Modern Homes

These masterpieces of modern architecture are still influencing home design today — see if any elements appear in your own home Full Story »

Randi Crawford I'm not the biggest fan of modern houses, as I find them somewhat cold and the Arts & Crafts too dark. (Although I love the details in the woodwork and stained glass artistry of A & C.) I have seen some gorgeous modern homes and I can appreciate the design innovations. I think what some are failing to grasp is that most of these houses were "laboratories" in which architects were putting into 3 dimensions ideas that they had visualized and that had not been done before. From my reading, it appears to be true that Falling Water has trouble with dampness and the Glass House gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter, but consider what their creators did and don't judge them as livable houses. Instead I think they should be regarded as concentrations of new ideas and in some cases, works of art, which were then disseminated through world culture and subsequently modified to be more practical and efficient.

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects A few minutes before looking at this article I studied photos of the Bass Residence in Fort Worth by Paul Rudolph. Interesting to see how much it has in common with Olsens homes. Beautiful work.

3david I appreciate much of his work and will visit the Bham art museum.

I encourage people to reconsider allowing light to shine out from our buildings at night. Artificial light has a terrible impact on moths and other nocturnal insects. And urban lighting is one of many ways we harm migrating birds. Yea, yea...I know some will say "they're just moths." But did you know that moths are one of our most valuable pollinating insects?

Besides, not that many people are out wandering around at night to enjoy the light show from buildings. I think this is a case of more harm than good.

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects Thanks Mike! We worked closely with a great welder in Austin who didn't mind holding up wood mock ups to test out widths of planks and size of gaps in between. Its nice to see that the effort and fine-tuning paid off. BTW, nice work that you all do too. I appreciate the eclectic range.

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects David- I would suggest contacting a company such as Portella doors an they could provide a more accurate quote. The doors in the photos were made made a local Austin welder who no longer makes doors.

Rustic Elegance Hey David, I would agree with Hugh, Portella is a great reference. You can also try Hopes (New York) or Torrance Steel Window Company (California). With True Divided Lite (T. D. L.) doors, be sure to ask about glass (provided or not) and glazing (done on-site or factory glazed). We have done T. D. L.s in the past, but not really in our scope of business now. However, if your interested, contact me (David Auhl) at 1-800-406-1958 and I can help you formulate some questions. Good Luck!!!

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects Great place to call home and to be an architect. The Umlauf Sculpture garden is worth a trip, as is Barton Springs Pool and of course, the UT campus, especially the original part of the campus designed by Paul Cret. And the moonlight towers. And one of the places that helped usher in modern day Tex-Mex, the original Chuys on Barton Springs Road.

tikibwana The Bohn's house, the 1939 home in your first photo was just down the street from my Grandmother's house up the street at 29th and Kerby Lane in Austin. My dad told stories of watching it be built when he was a youngster and how they drilled for a well for a spring-fed swimming pool, much like Barton Springs or Deep Eddy. I read an article recently that said somewhere along the line someone filled in the pool. If I ever win the lottery, I will buy that house and restore the pool... the inside of the house is as glorious as the outside.

kristinkan What color stain has been used? I've been searching for a long time to find a color that compliments pink brick so well! Also love the windows!!!!!!!!

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects Thanks for your kind words... I don't recall the stain name but it's a Benjamin moore stain from 7 years ago. Was meant to blend well with tree trunks. The wood is cedar.

Michelle Turner I am building in The Woodlands just north of Houston. Can you please give me the name of the steel window and door company.

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects They were made by an independent welder. Not a window and door company. Thanks

Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects There wasn't a real concern, but We made the steps shallower, 6" down and 18" in the horizontal dimension, so that they're less of a barrier than typical staircase type steps. Thanks
