Sonja Hilliard, DVM @Kristensdavis- I believe those are some densely packed orange bird of paradise (be careful when googling images as there are many different varieties of bird of paradise.) and below them I think are purple hydrangeas. Not sure which you were pointing to in the photo.

Tamara Cramer I liked this article. I am having trouble with the whole focal point idea - I have a sprawling yard with: a little bit of this and that which is here & there & everywhere- and I need some way to make visual borders to bring it one focal point in a few separate areas: front of house, patio, side of house (which really acts more as the front of the house) - and two barns - its on 3 acres and everything is spread so far apart I cant see a way to bring them together - but they each need their own focal point - Im so frustrated with this! Under 10" of snow in Michigan currently and just starting to put on my spring thinking cap! ~ needless to say "Michigan = budget problems"

McCarthy Metal Roofing Systems A lot of great ideas! How about a new roof? Most often, the roof line is half the profile of the home. Please see the following link for a few ideas: http://www.raleighdurhammetalroofing.com/metal-roofing-styles/

Liquidscapes Thank you!! The one project you are referring to was a unique situation. With a beautiful and intimate front porch, we wanted to create a space as if the owners felt they were sitting in there rear yard. There is a small water feature/focal point centered by the open porch as well. The views from the home to the road were not desirable, so we wanted to mask and soften them with plantings to create height, opposed to lawn.

4 Obstacles to Decluttering — and How to Beat Them

Letting go can be hard, but it puts you more in control of your home's stuff and style. See if any of these notions are holding you back Full Story »

joidevivre29 Our family tackled our overstuffed basement yesterday. We had accumulated furniture and sporting equipment from 37 years of marriage and four children, as well as from both sides of the family over several generations. Some pieces of antique furniture were too special to part with (although they may not make it through the next purge), but we filled the car three times with items to consign or donate. We put a set of patio chairs by the street and by dark they were gone, which made us glad that someone will put them to good use. And there is still a huge amount of recycling/ trash to be picked up this week. Now, the whole house feels calmer, with the foundation in order. Thanks for the motivation to get started on this!

Peggy Tupper I too started another decluttering project today. Have wanted to get rid of a side by side fridge freezer in my garage and a set of bunk beds in a basement bedroom. We do not use either of these items but they took up a lot of space. I posted separate ads on Kijiji and got phone calls within 1 minute for each. Both items picked up within 1 hour. Posting on Kijiji as FREE means that your items will go fast.

I will be posting more Kijiji ads in the next week or so because it is so easy to find someone who wants the stuff and will come and get it.

The Easiest, Cheapest, Nontoxic Way to Unclog a Drain

Keep nasty chemicals out of the water supply and gnarly plumbing snakes out of your storage. This method uses a superhero you already have Full Story »

Joe Provey Dear Melcor Developments...thanks for the sensible comment. I've used a hose approach to clogs for 30 years (about two dozen times). It has never failed to push out the clog in just a few seconds.

    johnadams What a popular topic!

Our main drain backed up shortly after moving into our empty-for-two-years foreclosure. After trying my usual solutions, called in the pros (which I almost never do). Very friendly and 'helpful'. Let me know about my roots problem, showed me the problem on his video camera, and proposed the $6K solution (replace the line). Just augur the roots, please.

After some web research, I found a chemical (Roebic foaming root killer) you flush down the toilet that keeps roots from coming back. Available on Amazon and at Home Depot, I believe. Been treating the line annually for three years and have had zero problems.

I know this plumber knew there was a far, far cheaper solution than the one he recommended, but I guess he needed that bass boat. Well, I'm not buying it for him.

Uppercase Living Ind. Demonstrator Jean Danieu Crista, my guess is that the floors are pine. I would call a floor refinisher for an estimate to get their expert opinion on how they would refinish your floor. You could pick their brain regarding stains, damage, etc. If the floor has never been refinished there shouldn't be a problem using an orbital floor sander. My husband refinished our floors using this method with good results. The problem is that these sanders are heavy and hard to control. You may also want to have a sandless refinisher take a look. If the floor is in good condition (no visible physical or water damage) they put a chemical on the surface to remove the old finish (not sure if this method removes stain) and then apply new finish. Hope this helps…Good Luck!

Uppercase Living Ind. Demonstrator Jean Danieu I showed the pictures to my husband who is a cabinetmaker and he thought that it looked like yellow pine or spruce. He didn't think it looked like oak in the photo because there aren't many grain markings. Red oak characteristically has a zig-zag pattern and is broad-grained. Also, I suggested talking to an expert more for the information…you don't have to hire them...that way you can decide if you can do it yourself. You want to do it right the first time and enjoy the time and money spent.

Crista Murray All good ideas, thank you.

sunkeybunch If it is pine I would not stain it. I would just put poly over it. People pay LOTS of money for pine floors. (I work at a flooring store).
