I do not for a moment regret the money I spent having my new house designed by an architect. I am not a 1%-er and choosing to have an architect did cause us to have a smaller house than we could have had if we would have gone with a simpler design. But my husband and I love our new house and part of the reason is the little things that an architect does. For example, the wood storage cubby outside the front door flows into the hall closet right inside the front door which flows into the books shelves that line the wall of the living room and that flows into the kitchen where the windows frame a wonderful view. There are so many of these little details that make our house "ours."
