Paintings by Kirsten Elizabeth Gilmore Mary Ann--I like your idea. :) Either stretched canvas (with extra sturdy, "heavy duty" stretcher bars like I use) or a cradled wood panel (shaped like a stretched canvas, but all wood) can be hung like that.

You would need to make sure to use very sturdy hinges for that size knife painting, though. Paintings with such heavy texture are several pounds heavier than brush paintings because of all of the structure gel medium used.

If you do decide to go ahead with something like that, feel free to email me and we can work out designs, colors, prices, etc.

ribsoo6 Thank you so much everyone for the wonderful idea's and advice. My home was built in 1907, but a more modern fireplace was put in about 5 years ago and we are just about to reinstate a traditional large wooden mantel, so hopefully that will keep the heat away from the T.V. Love the painting idea!

Laura A single wall kitchen is ok, UNLESS it's right next to the living area. I would not want my couch (or any upholstered furniture, really) that close to the kitchen. Yuck. Having a table or island to separate things and do double duty (prep/eating area) would be fine though. Some of the kitchens featured are really lovely.

chemistrykaren What a great thread, with some fabulous pics. I have a recently finished one-wall kitchen in my little Victorian house, and adore it. Of course it's not for everyone, but it's definitely for me :). It makes best use of the space I had to work with after knocking down some partition walls to get a view through and door to the back garden. Behind two bi-fold doors to the left are a washing machine with furnace above, and a utility/powder room.

newcs 3 things I've had good luck with (and I usually kill all houseplants): Aloe, spider plants and my new favorite are the mini orchids from Just Add Ice. I don't use ice since it damaged a leaf but this little plant from the grocery store has been going strong and blooming for a couple months now, even though I went away for 2 weeks. I just water it a little bit each weekend and don't do anything else.

nagoose The only plants I haven't killed are the plastic ones. The live ones that are still alive don't look nearly as good as the fakes, either looking sickly or near death. And I only get the "unkillable" ones!

I keep trying even after saying in despair to my husband as I recycle yet another plant I am just going to replace each one as they die with plastic ones. I definitely love plants to death. They don't last too long with me. Sigh.

hopingtogetfit Recently repainted our walls with BM's Ballet White (and Dove White in a few other rooms). I am absolutely in LOVE with both whites, especially the Ballet White, which has a slight gray undertone. It looks like a soft linen color. My wood floors, furniture, artwork and accessories now stand out so much better.
