Another method used in the past were wood shake roofs with open purlins. This would provide a means for ventilation in the hot attic space while the thick wood shake provided insulation from the hot sun.

Unfortunately, now days due to fire codes, wood shake roofs have been outlawed (like in Los Angeles). The roofs have been replaced with asphalt composition roofs...a lot are too dark and absorb heat. The asphalt roofing felt and shingles have little insulating properties, so heat is conducted down into an attic space through the contact made with plywood under sheathing. Most old homes don't have enough attic ventilation to accommodate the new, hotter roof.
