The cabinet doors are thick enough that you don't need handles. If they were flat slab then you would need them and there are no drawers, just doors.

That's a great site, Kelli! And yes, while it is not uncommon to locate a seam in the middle of a sink, many of our granite pro's will let the pattern of the stone dictate the seam location. So the easy answer is that every case--like every piece of stone-- is different.

If the conversion was done without permits and you will spend your money to remodel, it will not be a legal conversion, therefore they can make you tear everything out. Not to mention if something should happen, insurance company will not cover the damages because it was done without permits.

I agree with GN Builders LLC about permits. You could also be forced to tear it out before you sell it.

In the area I'm in, you can build something up to 500 sq ft without a permit, but you can't but in electricity.

I would put the sink and dishwasher in the island and the cooktop with vent hood in the corner. Your eye will still be drawn to the corner but now it will be beautiful.

I agree with the lighting, lighting is very important in a room. Can you add cans?
Your furniture and rug are all dark, you can keep the dark furniture but add a very large graphic patterned rug with more light colors with limited dark colors.
I would also hang curtains from floor to ceiling and extend the rods all the way to the other walls, let the panels hang over the wall this will make the window seem larger. Place a panel between the two windows as well. Hang them flat, no tie backs.

Consider changing the colour of the wall as well.

Karen,
It's a good thing that the Piano isn't blocking the light from the window. Given the size of your room, the overhead light you have will not be able to light up the whole room. I suggest you use an Arco Floor Lamp to bring the kind of illumination you're looking for.
Check this out - http://www.manhattanhomedesign.com/arco-lamp.html

I don't get the circular tile on the shower wall...does nothing for me. I like the wood cabinet/shelf but do not really care for the rest of the paneling- makes it look small and dark overall.

@cabingirl maybe it's supposed to be reminiscent of a porthole? That's what I think of anyway.

And I'm right there with flyr4fun, I think it's all how we associate it. While I do think this space looks nice, I can't stop picturing it as a motor home's bathroom. In context I'm sure it's fine though :)

There are many different directions you could go.
Adding shutters and flower boxes will add great dimension, you could also trim around the entire window then add the shutters. This would add even more depth.
Just about any color combination will work - any colors that you prefer?
Another option if you want to add even more interest, place a wider plank board along the lowest placed window all the way around the house and paint the house 2 different colors....

Here's the red for your door and window trim if you love the look .. . . http://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW7600-bolero/
this one has a brown undertone . .

Must say I would not paint . .think lot of your rustic charm is the varied way that the plank has weathered . use a clear finish on it if you need to protect it (is it possible/ likely that it is cedar plank that has been left to weather? )

Just another thought - a blue green would be just as charming and perhaps a better foil for the browner tones in your wood . . . something clear but muted enough to be an outdoor color for the door and trim and shutters . . test bm azores http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/azores
I looked at sw but they just don't have the depth and muting together you need . . their blues in this vein are a bit too bright . . .and it is the weathered muting that makes it more cottagey, which is where I think you are going . . sea glass is a great option you should also test . . you can test grenada villa (a bit too green) stratton blue (a bit too light - maybe great for all the pots or the front door if you do the trim in the azores . . .

you could wash the wood rather than paint it - mix paint with water . . look at bm barnwood if you are interested in that . . http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/barnwood#ce_s=barnwood that will keep the grain coming through / don't prime it ..

good luck . . she is a lovely property

How to Bring Beige Walls to Life

Even with the extension tools, I get a stiff neck from painting ceilings. My solution: Paint ceiling one day, no painting the next. Instead I restrict activities to non-neck straining types. The third day I paint the walls, the fourth is the trim.
Forty years ago I could do an entire 12x13' bedroom in a day and a half, including the ceiling. Not any more. The last time I tried, I couldn't do anything else for three days. Finally wised up and now I plan on 4 days per room, regardless of size.

Do you have a photo showing the full door and hinges? They look like good quality slab doors with a routed-out design. Is that correct, or are they laminated?

What's under the carpet, or rather, what new flooring options are you considering?

maybe you could hang a bamboo or woven or any blind, for that matter, mounted from the ceiling above the cabinets and just pull it or roll it down so that it is resting on the top of the cabs. OR a piece of fabric?
I'm with Gabbert's....I wouldn't worry too much about the way the place looks, nor would I spend a lot of money on anything until you move to your permanent place. 6 months WILL fly by!!!
You could always change the light fixture in the kitchen if you wanted to go that far. Good Luck!

I don't think I would put anything up there as your eye is drawn to the cluster of items above or go simple with 2 long rectangle containers with green grass. Simple, fresh and clean, like photo below but much longer.

I would hang the pear picture on the wall to the right of the couch, I can't tell how big it is, if it is not that large I recommend getting a really big print with the colors of you pillows, grays, whites and blacks (like the pear art), it will be very dramatic against that white wall and that is where your eye would be drawn to.

You can see into the kitchen, I would put something on that back wall in the kitchen - on the counters (backsplash area). I would add the green from the pillows. Maybe a bowl with green apples or pears, with a few stainless canisters.

I would not put to much into the space as it is temporary.....
