Janet Greenwood Wonderful article and comments! Anyone know when exterior waterproofing started on basements? We are working on a 1955 walkout ranch basement. We have had 2 places re-tucked and haven't noticed water coming in from outside, but plenty other concerns - insane wiring, plumbing, leaking pipes, etc. We have already had to rip out moldy drywall/carpets from previous water heater leaks, etc. and don't want what we are fixing to get ruined when the next disaster hits. I love the painted concrete idea or tile. Can one rubberize the utility room so water doesn't seep into the nice part of the basement? We also worry about ceiling access and cold floors in the winter. I know adding insulation in the walls will help - I'm not sure radiant floor heating is practical. Any comments on what has worked for someone else would be greatly appreciated!
