Things always cost more than you think. Changing your mind costs.

Agree with the comment re planning ahead for what you cannot afford now. When we built. we thought that we might like a spa pool one day. There was no room in the budget for that but we did pay $90 for an exterior electrical socket so that we can easily go ahead if we are in that position (i.e. paid off the mortgage). Factoring in the cost of interest on top of the purchase price of a spa pool could almost double the price over the long term. Maybe I am stingy.

On the other hand, there are some things that I had to have done at the time of building, like the landscaping, as last time we waited 12 years and 3 days for a proper driveway before the earthquake ruined the land (lateral spreading and liquefaction). Though my husband thought that was a plus as he looked out over our yard as soon as the sun came up!

I needed to redo my house and luckily had the storage space,I went to the restore, kijiiji ectand saved 15,000 at least on the project,if you have the time use it wisely,if you can buy the parts yourself do it daily, look for clearances and all adds up in your favour.if its 500 dollars cheaper because its got a scratch on the back no one will see its fine. life isnt perfect and things can get damaged at full price.take advantage of the savings if you can

Hmmmmm, makes me rethink that space under my bed. I think dust bunnies would live there regardless, knowing that the gestational period for a dust bunny in my houz ( HAAA! how irreverent is that?) is about 2 weeks. I hope I'm never cured of "Houz" envy. Thank you!

@Sauve. I couldn't suggest an exact lamp, but it would have to be something that directs light to a focus, as opposed to dispersing it across the room. If your husband basically just reads books (as opposed to doing actual work on a laptop, or brings paperwork into bed) you might consider buying him an e-reader or ipad since they are backlit. If all else fails, there's always a good old sleeping mask, if you can hack that :)
