There is a big difference between a gas fireplace and a gas "fireplace" appliance. I found this out only recently, when we bought a home from some people who had converted their wood-burning FP to gas-only. The appliances are sealed units, and modern ones often come with a thermostat. We had one in our previous home, and it did heat well (besides being extremely safe, easy-to-use, and clean). I'm sure it was also very efficient. What we have now draws air from the room, just like a traditional FP, so it's used with a screen -- not glass -- and doesn't heat as efficiently. Still, that's OK: In Northern California we're seeing more and more "spare the air" nights, meaning no wood-burning allowed. The particulate matter that wood-burners spew is definitely not good for the environment or anyone's health. And I happen to love the smell of a good old-fashioned wood fire!

We love the flat minimalistic look. Whether it's gas, electric or wood, if you like a modern design aesthetic, a fireplace easily becomes the focal point of any room.

What protective finish would you use on rock, especially the hearth, to keep smoke or ashes from staining the rock?

Another great option, is stone veneer. Veneer offers a lightweight, low cost alternative to stone, tile and paint. The finished product looks just like real stone, but without the added weight and structural requirements. Stone veneer comes in a large variety of styles, and can be custom colored to match exactly what you're looking for. It's also weather proof- it works both inside and out.

There are several related questions and I will try to answer them. We install the mantel first directly on to the brick and then install the stone around the brick for a finished look. If you have stone already in place, it is very difficult to get a smooth fit with out chiseling out the stone.

We manufacture the stone in our factory in Libertyville. The style of stone is our Dry Stack and the cost per square foot for the stone is $8.00. For the entire project the stone cost was close to $600.00.

The total cost of the project with stone and installation is approximately $3000 in the Chicago market. The mantel is additional and it was made by our local craftsman and retailed for approximately $950.00.

The best way to mount a TV with stone veneer is to mount the TV before the stone work is completed. This way you can hide the HDMI cables and the electric behind the stone. A TV bracket is then secured into 2x6"s that are attached first and the stone goes around this block.

To Beth of Curb Appeal, the exterior stone project in Libertyville turned out very nicely.

Our company manufactures a stone veneer very similar to the stone in the picture and we call the stone Narrow Profile. If you need assistance with sourcing stone for a project, please contact us. Every batch of stone is hand colored and we can create a color and look just for your project. Below are a couple of projects with the Narrow Profile stone.

We hate to see fireplaces removed, so our vote would be to keep it. :) But what could update it and bring it to a more modern, versatile fireplace space would be to cover the exisiting fireplace (we're partial to using stone) and build it all the way up to the ceiling. That style of fireplace really gives a great, lasting focal point to the room and can also help the room to appear bigger. You could build out the fireplace slightly and then add stone veneer right on top of that and continue up. It would be beautiful. Congrats on the new home!

Not sure if the glass would look right on the floor, and as Darzy mentioned, the style of the glass might get old. You'd be better off going with a more versatile product like stone or slate. But really like the idea of having a different design on the front of the steps- that's a great idea.

Travertine is very "in" right now and yet there are people out there who have never heard of it. I would be interested to see how long the mortar will hold to the stair case. Without some sort of heavy adhesion/attachment strategy, the tile might come off sooner rather than later.

I have cork glue flooring planks that look like travertine...but they are standard floating floor planks that glue straight to a clean riser/tread. Same look but without the worry of tiles falling off any time something goes thumping down or into the stairs.
