Business Description
Paul Davis Architects (PDA) is a full-service, Los Angeles-based design firm that believes ambitious architecture can have a profound effect on people's happiness, productivity, and enjoyment of everyday living.

We believe this can be accomplished with special attention to beauty in building, “fit” (the rightness of a designed thing in its role and place), and an economy that celebrates intelligent choice-making. We are advocates for sustainable design in our projects not only with strategic use of "green" materials and technologies but with careful study of best principles in building location and configuration. We embrace the notion that “Small Can Be Beautiful” (after economist E.F. Schumacher). Although we are well-versed in the use of exquisite materials and highest-quality construction, we do not believe that a project needs to be expensive to be good. Rather, we understand that clear thinking, skill and a keen understanding of the needs of our clients can enable us to create unique places at reasonable cost.

The firm and its personnel are experienced in a broad range of residential and commercial project types, including new modern single-family homes, historic renovations, multi-family building interior and shell work, retail stores, restaurants, and corporate facilities with institutional or cultural components.

Hi, cahp - the grid size is 4 X 4" - building code here in CA mandates that so a 4" ball can't get through the openings. We call this the "4" ball test", and it's to prevent trouble with babies' heads!

Thanks for your question.

Hi Christy - you have a good eye! It is horsetail, as seen shortly after the house was finished. Not long afterwards, the client retained landscape designers who implemented a nice re-do of the planting. I can tell you to be careful of horsetail - it can spread very aggressively, and be hard to get out if you ever tire of it! I think it's showing up less often these days, because people have had trouble. We liked the look, but don't miss it too much.

By the way, aggressive plants like horsetail and bamboo can be controlled with underground "rhizome barriers", which are plastic membranes that keep the roots from leaving a give area. Check that out - your landscape contractor should be able to put them in for you.

Good luck!

Best,

Paul
