If there is seating at the island a general rule is 36-40 inches above the island top.

Hi. It really depends upon the fixture. The fixture in the photo is small and the counter top is broad. Unless you are very tall you would have a difficulty leaning over far enough to hit your head. But it is always a balance between getting the light low enough for the task without it getting in your way or shining in your eyes when you are seated. Different shades call for different distances as well. I have successfully set a fixture as low as 24 inches but generally I find 30-36 inches above the island top to be more common. But nothing beats playing with the fixture length in the actual conditions.
