Mary, we've used this detail on a few projects. The depth of the shelf is approx. 12" and the width is around 27" clear between vertical supports. The key feature is that the vertical supports are actually recessed back about an inch so the shelf appears to run continuous, like a series of horizontal slabs.

Elizabeth Gillin was the Interior Design consultant on this project. She may be able to be more specific on the interior finishes.

The lumber is rough sawn oak, random plank. The stain is a mix on site of dark walnut and several other colors but that was the base. Elizabeth B Gillin Interiors

Grays typically will look very different from side to side depending on the lighting. The siding we used was a Cedar Impressions product by Certainteed, however it has since been discontinued.

The backing we used here is solid wood just like the cabinet faces. If you desire a reflective surface I suggest using a plate glass mirror.

Get in the Swing of Things With a Hanging Bed

Give your bedroom a style lift with a fully or partially suspended bed — or one that just mimics the look Full Story

if you make a model and suspend it from all 4 corners, I think you would find the swinging is very minimal. The ropes/chains tend to work against each other, not in unison. It's not like a porch swing with one suspension at each end.

When we designed the hanging bed in image 3, we designed it with 4 hidden adjustable legs below. In the case of a windy day or if you don't want the bed to swing, the legs can be adjusted to make the bed tight to the floor so it doesn't swing at all. This project has now been completed for three years now and the client has never complained about the bed swinging too much, in fact she has commented on how nice the gentle sway of the bed is.

Thank you for liking our project. The window panels are custom mahogany with an integrated railing. We designed two interchangeable panels. One with a screen and one with a tempered glass storm panel so the room may be used year round.

This project is about eight years old now and the exterior finish still looks great. I believe it was Light Mist.
