The ballusters are 5/4 x 1-1/2 that were cut from 5/4 mahogany decking material. Once fabricated the railings were sprayed with one coat of Benjamin Moore Oil base primer and two finish coats. The house is now 9 years old and the railings have held up very well against the elements. At the time this house was built, Azek was not being used nearly as much as it is today. While we did use Azek for much of the exterior trim there was not as much available as far as assorted sizes and shapes back in 2004. Also, Azek should not be used as a structurally material, its more of a trim and cladding material. If you are looking for more of a maintenance free system we often use the Spectis product line which also can be painted and looks just like wood. Take a look at our Warren Avenue and South Surf Road projects.

No, most of the trimwork is all Azek, except for the curved crown that came as a flexible piece to match to rest. I don't recall who the manufacturer was, but Brian Furey, Falcon Industries was the GC and they would know. All of the railings on this project are Spectis. I really like your product, so I specify it often.

Isn't it though? The photography is amazing too, and I love it's relationship to the landscape, particularly that long wall to the slope of the terrain.

Just take a chip and have it mixed again! The Ben Moore store will get it very close if not exact. We have done it many times.

Mary, we've used this detail on a few projects. The depth of the shelf is approx. 12" and the width is around 27" clear between vertical supports. The key feature is that the vertical supports are actually recessed back about an inch so the shelf appears to run continuous, like a series of horizontal slabs.

The lumber is rough sawn oak, random plank. The stain is a mix on site of dark walnut and several other colors but that was the base. Elizabeth B Gillin Interiors

Grays typically will look very different from side to side depending on the lighting. The siding we used was a Cedar Impressions product by Certainteed, however it has since been discontinued.
